Citing How do I cite a YouTube video or a lecture? The uploader is the author for video; the lecturer for a lecture. Add a timestamp for a specific moment, and check whether your lecture is even citable. Writing Should I avoid the passive voice in academic writing? Not as a rule. Use it when the actor is unknown, irrelevant or obvious, or when the object is the topic. Avoid it when it hides who did something. Citing How do I cite a source I found quoted in another source? Use a secondary citation — "Jones (1987, as cited in Smith, 2019)" in APA. Only Smith goes in your reference list, because Smith is what you actually read. Studying Does spaced repetition actually work? Yes, and it is two effects, not one: testing yourself beats rereading, and spreading those tests out beats massing them. The first matters more. Writing Is hedging bad in academic writing? Only when it hedges a claim your evidence supports. If the evidence is genuinely partial, saying so is good scholarship rather than weak writing. Grades What is a credit hour and why does it matter? It is how much a course counts. A grade in a four-credit module moves your average four times as much as the same grade in a one-credit one. Studying How long can you concentrate for? There is no single number, and the popular ones are unsourced. What matters is the task, the time of day and how interruptible you are. Studying How do I read a journal article quickly? Not front to back. Abstract, then conclusion, then figures — decide in three minutes whether it deserves an hour, and only then read properly. Citing Which citation style does my course want? Look at the date. Bracketed after the author is APA or Harvard; at the very end is MLA; unbracketed is Chicago. Citing How do I cite a website with no author? The title moves into the author position. Never write Anonymous, and never use the web address as the author. Writing How long is a 2,000-word essay? About 4 pages single-spaced or 8 double-spaced — but the typeface alone moves that by two pages. Citing Does citing a source make it not plagiarism? Not if you kept the author's sentence structure. That is patchwriting, and it is the most common case by a distance. Grades What grade do I need on my final exam? (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. If it comes back above 100, that grade is arithmetically out of reach. Citing Is a bibliography the same as a reference list? No. A reference list holds only what you cited; a bibliography can also include what you read. APA and Harvard use the first, MLA calls it works cited. Writing How do I cut an essay that is over the word limit? Not by deleting a paragraph. Cut hedging, throat-clearing openers and nominalisations first — that recovers 8 to 12% without losing any argument at all. Studying Does the Pomodoro technique actually work? For starting, yes — it makes the first step small. The 25-minute interval is arbitrary though, and it fights any work that needs a long run-up. Grades What counts as a good GPA? It depends entirely on what for. 3.0 clears most employer filters, 3.5 is competitive for graduate school, and after your first job almost nobody asks. Citing Can I cite ChatGPT in an essay? APA makes OpenAI the author; MLA makes your prompt the title. Check your department allows it at all before you worry about the format. Writing What does a readability score measure? Sentence length and word complexity, and nothing else. Shuffle your sentences into a random order and the score does not move. Grades Is a 4.0 GPA the same everywhere? No. Weighted scales add up to 1.0 for AP courses and go past 4.0, and the schemes differ by school, so they do not compare.
